We Can't Do This Alone

We're on a mission - but we need your help to make it a reality.

We live in a paradoxical time where Islam is both loved and hated in the West. In the same country with a Muslim ban, Moulana Rumi is a best-selling poet. But which Rumi? Translations of Islamic poetry often hardly resemble the original text - the Islamic is erased, the format changed, and many other liberties are taken with the text - all to make it more palatable to the secular, Western reader.

The 'translators' of Persian poetry - like Coleman Barks - often don't even know Persian at all. Their writings are poor paraphrases of archaic Victorian translations at best - and outright fabrications at worst. Though Persian poetry is written in rhyme and meter, English language translations rarely attempt to replicate the original form and settle for prose or free-verse. Poems are cobbled together, lines are added and removed from poems - many changes are made at liberty, and the resulting confusing mess can hardly be called a translation.

Why should we allow this travesty of misrepresentation, misuse, and outright fabrication to continue?

My goal is to accurately translate Persian poetry, I want to reclaim our spiritual heritage and bridge the gap between the original texts and English readers.

Finding a poem, writing it in calligraphy, translating it, making the translation rhyme, consulting dictionaries and scholarly sources is a lengthy process. A short poem often takes an hour, a longer ghazal can take many hours.

How much time I can dedicate to this project depends on your help. If just a handful of fans chip in, I can afford to reduce some of my working hours and focus more on poetry translation. Thank you for taking the time to visit my page.

Benefits for Patreon supporters:

  1. Patreon supporters are added to a WhatsApp chat where transliterations and readings of poems from the page are posted.

Help Us Get the Books We Need:

MANY OF YOU HAVE ASKED WHEN WE'LL RELEASE A BOOK - I'm happy to say that it's in the works. The books will include the rhyming translations of Persian poetry, the original Persian text, necessary background information, and extensive notes. Many of these poems never been accurately translated into English poetry before.

I've nearly finished the translation work for the first book, but I need access to academic books that are quite expensive (about 125$ each).

This is where I'm asking you, the readers to help: There's nearly fifty thousand of you! If everyone donated just a few cents, that would be enough funding to get all the books we need and more. If each of you could donate what little they can, whether by joining the Patreon, or a one-time donation via Paypal or Venmo, it would go a long way and help us make sure these books are published.

No organization, university, grant, or large donor is funding this project. It's made possible by small donations from followers like you.
