Persian Female Poets Uncovered for the First Time

My hope’s that God will make you fall in love

with someone cold and callous just like you

And that you’ll realize my true value when

you’re twisting in the torments I’ve been through.

-Rābiʿa Balhkī, 10th century

Our class begins with the 10th-century Sufi Rābiʿa Balhkī and ends with the Women’s rights activists in the early 20th century.

We’ll travel through space and culture with poets hailing from as far west as the Balkans and Egypt to as far east as India, united by their Persian poetry.

Whether you’re a poetry enthusiast or a casual reader, we know you’ll enjoy this course.

What will you accomplish?

  • Read from female poets lost in the pages of history.

  • Learn about the history of women in the Persianate realm.

  • See the side of Persian poetry you don’t usually hear—court rivalries, divorces, infidelity, reflections on life as a woman, and more!

Student Testimonials

“Poetess was one of the most profound and empowering courses I have taken. I believe it should be taught at universities. If anyone can teach such a course with an empathetic, inclusive, feminist, decolonized lens, it’s @sharghzadeh. I am so grateful the course was recorded, I re-watch the recordings often! Please design part two for us!”
